Assam down town University organized an Awareness Programme on Mental Health at Barebarania CLF Primary Co-operative Society, Bonda, with the objective of promoting mental health awareness among women and the community.
The event was conducted under the initiative of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in collaboration with the Outreach and Extension Committee and witnessed enthusiastic participation from 56 women and 21 students, accompanied by faculty members Dr. Manjusha Saikia, Associate Professor, and Dr. Shyam Choudhury B. Choudhury, Assistant Professor.
The session began with a warm welcome address by Dr. Manjusha Deka Saikia, who greeted the participants and explained the purpose of the programme. She highlighted the growing importance of mental health in today’s fast-paced society, particularly among women who often balance multiple roles at home and work. Her words set the tone for an engaging and insightful session on psychological well-being.
Following the welcome, Ms. Bhaswati Bora, Block Co-ordinator of the Assam State Rural Livelihood Mission (ASRLM), elaborated on the organization’s objectives and various initiatives undertaken to empower women. She emphasized the vital role women play not only in their families but also in building emotionally resilient communities.
To make the theme more relatable, the students of FHSS presented a short skit depicting a typical family setting and the emotional challenges women face while balancing responsibilities. The performance highlighted how open communication, empathy, and self-awareness can nurture a healthier home environment and was highly appreciated by the audience for its meaningful message.
The session was further enriched by Dr. Manjusha Deka Saikia, who spoke on key aspects of mental health such as emotional regulation, postpartum depression, stress management, and self-care. The programme concluded with a deep breathing and relaxation exercise, allowing participants to experience the calming effects of simple stress-relief techniques.
