Assam down town University successfully organized an insightful guest lecture on “Impurity Profiling in Pharmaceuticals” under the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science. The session was delivered by Dr. Pawan Kumar Porwal from the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Guwahati, with the aim of enhancing students’ understanding of impurity profiling, regulatory expectations, and advanced analytical techniques in pharmaceutical sciences.
The program began with a welcome address by Dr. Saikat Sen, Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science, who highlighted the importance of impurity profiling in ensuring drug safety, efficacy, and quality in the evolving pharmaceutical industry.
During the lecture, Dr. Porwal explained the classification and sources of pharmaceutical impurities and discussed key regulatory guidelines, particularly ICH Q3A and Q3B, which govern impurities in drug substances and drug products. He also highlighted advanced analytical techniques such as HPLC, GC, UPLC, LC-MS, and GC-MS used in impurity detection and characterization. The session further covered degradation studies, stability testing, and emerging concerns like genotoxic impurities and nitrosamine contamination, emphasizing the need for strong quality control and regulatory compliance.
The interactive session witnessed active participation from undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students, along with faculty members. The lecture concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Manish Gautam, Associate Dean (Academics), who expressed gratitude to the speaker and appreciated the valuable insights shared. The session proved to be highly informative, strengthening students' understanding of pharmaceutical quality assurance and regulatory practices.
