The National Service Scheme (NSS), under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, was launched in 1969 to commemorate the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi. Initially, it involved 40,000 students from 37 universities, focusing on personality development through community service. Today, NSS boasts over 3.2 million student volunteers across 298 universities and 42 (+2) Senior Secondary Councils and Directorates of Vocational Education nationwide. Since its inception, more than 37.5 million students from universities, colleges, and institutions of higher learning have participated in NSS activities, benefiting from the program as student volunteers.
The program is designed to instil a deep sense of social responsibility in students, encouraging them to serve society without discrimination. NSS volunteers actively work to ensure that assistance reaches those in need, aiming to improve their standard of living and help them lead a life of dignity. Volunteers engage through their community service, learning valuable lessons about resilience. Moreover, NSS plays a crucial role during times of crisis, such as natural disasters and calamities. Volunteers are often at the forefront, providing essential aid including food, clothing, and first aid to victims. This hands-on experience not only helps disaster-affected individuals but also imparts critical skills and a strong sense of empathy to the volunteers. Through these diverse activities, NSS fosters holistic development in students, shaping them into responsible and compassionate citizens.
