M.A. in Sociology programme prepares the students for a better understanding towards human society and their relationships. It provides multiple training and opportunities in research through dissertation work in the relevant topics where they get practical exposure in the field. Apart from the classroom teaching, the students shall undergo Mini Research, Techno-Professional Skill, Corporate Proficiency courses which will further enable them to do better in the field of sociology and will contribute to the well-being of the society at large. The programme will provide the opportunity to understand the different perspectives of society.

Courses for this semester
This course intends to make the students realize the necessity of sociological theories in the study of sociology. Students will learn how different phenomenon of everyday life can be related to the different classical sociological theories. The course talks about important concepts like division of labour in society and its applicability. The course also talks about class and class struggle . Important concepts like religion, suicide, power, authority and bureaucracy are covered up in this syllabus.
This course talks about the concept of family and marriage sociologically, certain key terms like affinity, descent, incest taboo and the like. It includes kinship and family patterns in various parts of India. The new pattern in kinship and marriage, gay and lesbian relationship and marriage, surrogacy, New Reproductive Technology are also a part of this course.
The course introduce the students to the sociological approaches to understand Indian society in terms of its institutions, social processes and issues. It focuses on the social change, caste system and the status of women in the different periods. The course will help the students to understand about the distribution and problems of tribal society.
The paper will look at the foundation, emergence, reproduction and consequences of social stratification and social and social inequality. The course will draw on different sociological theories and a variety of empirical studies to provide insight into the system of social stratification. This course includes study of the individual’s position in the stratification system which determines their life, chances, education, and family life depends on the system of social inequality.
The course aims to introduce the nature, scope and the importance of sociology. It will help to familiarize the students with the basic concepts of Sociology and the concepts society, community, norms, socialisation social groups etc are emphasized.

The course aims to introduce the concept of development and to familiarize the students with the various perspectives on development. It will also enable to acquaint the students with the theories of development. The course attempts to understand the current practices of development by an analysis of the approaches, agencies and issues involved in it.
The course is a general introduction to the methodologies of sociological research. It will enable students to develop a sound understanding of both quantitative and qualitative research.
The course aims at providing a sociological understanding of Northeastern Societies and to provide a multi-dimensional understanding of Northeast India. It emphasizes on making the students learn about the region, its people and problems from sociological point of view.
The course aims to inculcate research culture among students and to develop the sense of working together in a team. It also emphasise to equip the students to acquire the skills of applications of theoretical knowledge to fields.
The course aims to enhance the communication skills, personality and boost confidence of the students in facing the interview. The course comprises of a viva-voce in which comprehensive questions are asked relevant to the subject. An external examiner will be invited and the student will be assess on the basis of the performance in the viva-voce.

The course aims on exploring the ways in which ideas about gender and sexuality shape social roles and identities, as well as the ways in which race, ethnicity, class, and nationhood influence the perception and experience of gender and sexuality within particular cultures.
The course aims to introduce the basic concept of health and medicine and to familiarize the students with the theoretical perspectives on Sociology of health The course will help to acquaint the students with the health care institutions and indigenous knowledge system of medicine.
The course emphasised on conceptualisation of Indian society, focusing on its structural linkages and interrelationships. It will enable the students to understand the continuity and changes in Indian society and the theoretical perspectives relating to Indian society.
The course aims to introduce the students about conceptual and theoretical understanding of Religion. It also aims to make the students learn about the linkage between religion and society. The significance of religion in the society are emphasised with sociological interpretation.
The main aim of the course is to enlighten the students regarding ethnographic methods and its development in order to study the social problems existing in society. It will help the students into the research methodologies and provide them a much needed framework of how to carry out an ethnographic enquiry. The course will highlight the different approaches to build a theoretical understanding and also the practical, hands-on experience of conducting fieldwork.

It also aims to familiarize the students with the relationship of Education and Society. Themes such as socialisation, social processes, social structure, social class, gendering inequalities and culture in the context of education are focused.

The course aims to make the students understand the relationship between population and society. It aims to provide insights and suggestions with regards to population and population policy.
The course aims to acquaint the students with the nature and functioning of political systems, and the political processes. It will generate in the minds of students an awareness of their status and role as citizens of the state. The course will enlighten the students about the political process in India.
The course will sensitize the students to the salience of the comparative perspective in sociology by highlighting the historical and social context of its development, key issues, and themes as well as theoretical concerns. It will also help to contextualize the above issues to the Indian situation.
The course will provide sociological understanding of rural social structure, change and development. It emphasises on imparting sociological skills to reconstruct rural institution and rural development programmes to plan, monitor and evaluate rural development programme and to acquaint students with the prevailing two approaches to the study of rural society: Rural community and peasantry.
The course will enable the students to understand the problems of the society and to understand the use of different method of research methodology. It will also enhance to develop innovative idea.
