National Cadet Corps (NCC)

Overview

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) in India was established under the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948. Its origins can be traced back to the "University Corps," created under the Indian Defense Act of 1917 to address a shortage in the Army. The NCC, headquartered in New Delhi, serves as the youth wing of the Armed Forces and is open to school and college students on a voluntary basis. As a Tri-Services Organization, comprising the Army, Navy, and Air Wing, the NCC is dedicated to grooming the nation's youth into disciplined and patriotic citizens. It is the largest uniformed youth organization, and its motto, "Unity and Discipline," reflects its mission. By embodying this motto, the NCC acts as a powerful unifying force, bringing together young people from diverse backgrounds and molding them into united, secular, and disciplined citizens of India.

Cadets must be made to understand the aim and purpose of teaching drill, so that they are suitably motivated and do not take it as "fatigue". Emphasis will be laid on correct bearing, marching, saluting and arms drill. Cadets generally take keen interest in weapon training and firing. All cadets get an opportunity to fire their authorized ammunition.

These activities aim at making our young people conscious and sensitive to the needs and problems of their fellow countrymen, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to enrich community life. The NCC has been in the forefront in rendering assistance to the needy. Some of the major areas of activities include blood donation, adult literacy, anti-dowry, anti-leprosy, anti-drug, tree plantation, eye donation and construction of roads. NCC has also laid great stress on ecology and conservation of plant life.

These exchanges are done with NCC community of 10 countries namely Australia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Canada, Maldives, Nepal, Singapore, UK, Russia and Vietnam at international level.
