Assam down town University successfully hosted a cultural and spiritual discourse on Chiya Geet, celebrating one of Assam’s most unique and soulful musical traditions.

The session, titled “The Cultural and Spiritual Significance of Chiya Geet,” brought together artists, researchers, and students for an enriching exchange of knowledge and performance. Renowned Chiya Geet artist Hiranyaprabha Nath, the first All India Radio-approved artist of this genre, emphasized the urgent need to preserve this musical heritage, stating that without conscious efforts, such traditions risk fading away over time.

Adding depth to the discussion, researcher Bhadrakanta Nath explained the spiritual essence of Chiya Geet, highlighting that the word “Chiya” signifies praise and remembrance of God. He elaborated on its musical structure, mythological roots, devotional expressions, and the strong influence of Vaishnavite traditions in shaping Assamese socio-cultural life. He also addressed the challenges faced by artists in adapting to changing cultural dynamics.

The session was further elevated by live performances from Hiranyaprabha Nath and accompanying artists, offering the audience an immersive experience of this devotional art form.

The event was organized by the Programme of Performing Arts under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell of Assam down town University. The welcome address was delivered by Professor Bandana Dutta, Dean of Studies, while Dr. Prateeti Barman (she/her), Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, spoke about the contemporary challenges faced by folk traditions.

The session was moderated by Assistant Professor Hirakjyoti Das and witnessed participation from students and researchers across various institutions in Guwahati. Esteemed personalities like Pradyut Kumar Mishra and Chandrima Sharma were also present, encouraging young learners and appreciating the initiative.

The event stood as a meaningful step towards preserving Assam’s intangible cultural heritage while inspiring the younger generation to stay connected with their roots
