Assam down town University observed the International Day for Biological Diversity under the global theme, “Act Locally for Global Impact.”
The celebration commenced with a Plantation Drive near the University Pond behind J Block. As part of the initiative, various nectar and host plants beneficial for butterflies, along with other economically and ecologically important insects and birds, were planted to create a biodiversity-friendly habitat within the university campus. The plantation included species such as Curry Leaf Tree, Bay Leaf, Mango, Golden Shower Climber, and Stone Apple. Faculty members, students, and staff actively participated in the activity, reflecting their commitment towards biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability.
Following the plantation drive, the Formal Session was held, which began with a warm welcome address by Professor L. N. Kakati, Chairperson of the AdtU Biodiversity Cell, who emphasized the importance of conserving biodiversity through collective local initiatives and sustainable practices.
The program also featured an insightful talk and video presentation by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) N. C. Talukdar, on the “Paddy Combined Harvester Machine,” presented as a significant case study. During the session, students were encouraged to actively contribute towards biodiversity conservation and maintaining ecological balance within the university campus.
One of the major highlights of the event was the release of “AdtU Nature,” a publication focusing on the biodiversity and natural heritage associated with the university campus and its surrounding environment. Released under the chief editorship of Dr. Gunamoni Das, the publication showcases valuable information and awareness related to biodiversity conservation and ecological studies.
The program concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks proposed by Professor Robin Gogoi, OSD, Faculty of Science, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, faculty members, students, organizers, and participants for making the event meaningful and successful.
