Session on Avian Biodiversity and Conservation Highlights Assam's Rich Bird Species

Assam down town University had the privilege of hosting an enriching session on “Wings of the Wildness: Exploring the Avian Biodiversity of Assam and Its Border Regions”, delivered by renowned Ornithologist and Bird Identification Expert, Firoz Hussain. 

The event commenced with a warm welcome and felicitation of the resource person by Dr. Manash Sarma, Dean, Faculty of Science. Firoz Hussain captivated the audience with a compelling presentation on the importance of avian biodiversity and conservation, featuring an engrossing video showcasing Assam’s rare and endangered bird species. He highlighted Assam’s rich ecosystem, which harbors nearly 850 bird species, including migratory and endemic birds like the Bengal Florican, Swamphen, White-winged Duck, and Greater Adjutant Stork. Stressing the urgency of biodiversity restoration and conservation strategies, he encouraged students to play an active role in protecting these species.

Adding to the significance of the event, Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. N. C. Talukdar, delivered an inspiring address on the profound connection between nature and human well-being, emphasizing its role in reducing stress and fostering empathy and happiness.

The session proved to be an eye-opening experience, deepening students' appreciation for Assam’s diverse avian life and the need for conservation efforts.
