ACADEMIC, RESEARCH AND INSTITUTE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES:

Academic:

• Involved in teaching of undergraduate, post graduate students leading to Masters’ and Doctoral degrees, research and other activities as a faculty member at Assam Agricultural University, at ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute Deemed University, Izatnagar, India with five campuses in India, and Tripura Central University affiliated College of Veterinary Science & AH.
• As member of Deans’ committee and chairman/member of various other committees in the universities and ASRB (Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, Govt of India) and ICAR system contributed significantly for updating and streamlining various academic and research programmes.
• Updating of course curriculum, conduct of training programmes, streamlining of evaluation systems at ICAR institutions/four Deemed Universitiesbesides the state Universities as a resource person.
• Contributed significantly for Human Resource Development in field of Veterinary medical sciences, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Reproduction, Biotechnology, Fishery Sciences, Post Graduate education etc.
• Guided and supervised 23 Post Graduate students for Masters’ (15) and Ph.D (8) degrees.
• At ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute Deemed University (I.C.A.R.) and Assam Agricultural University in India, managed and implemented all the academic programmes of Undergraduate and Post graduate degrees (Masters’ and Doctoral) in 23 disciplines, 9 National Diplomas, more than 100 training Courses including several International training courses etc.
• Improvement in quality and standard of education made by developing new, improved and revised Academic Regulations, revised course syllabi, hands on training methods, examination reforms in the universities and ICAR systems.
• Organized, conducted and coordinated more than 40 National and International seminars, conferences, congresses, symposia at I.V.R.I. and Assam Agricultural University.
• Approved, coordinated and conducted 35 National and International short term training courses annually since 2006 at I.V.R.I and conducted 63 national/regional/state level courses at A.A.U.
• Quality and standard of education improved through Monitoring of teaching programme, Performance Appraisal System for Teachers, Participatory management of teaching activities.

 

Research:

• Completed 18 internally and externally funded own Research and Development projects including the Molecular Genetics, cytogenetics and Biotechnology projects, livestock reproduction, breeding and improvement, and wild life and environment.
• Contributed in Molecular genetics of disease resistance, Cytogenetics, control of sex ratio, Reproduction enhancement, Genetic and phenotypic characterization of different species of animals’ Genomic DNA analysis and fingerprinting etc.
• Development of prediction equations for genetic evaluation and framing of breeding plans in livestock and poultry for NE region and India.
• Published 163 research papers in national and international journals of repute.
• Developed breeding strategy for production of suitable strains/crossbred animals and developed Package of practices and for conservation genetic resources.
• Contributed in wildlife and biodiversity conservation through research on reproduction and breeding of Asian elephants and Rhinoceros, RFID devise implantation and data storage and analysis in Indian elephant, Phylogenetic studies in India, Rhino translocation research and execution under WWF program in Nepal.

 

Extension activities and ToT and commercialization:

• Contributed immensely in Transfer of Technology through IPR, IPM activities and through patents, commercialization and in dissemination of technology. Several Technologies including new vaccines against animal diseases, seed materials for large scale vaccine production commercialized and sold to industrial houses at ICAR-IVRI Deemed University.
• Published several extension bulletins, package of practices for the farmers, entrepreneurs and resource persons in Assam Agricultural University and ICAR-IVRI Deemed University.
• Acted as a National Resource Person for the National Rural Livelihood Mission Programme (NRLM) in association with NIRD, GoI, Hyderabad and NE Regional centre.
• Organized Kishan Mela, Exhibitions, Awareness and Training programmes annually at ICAR-IVRI, Izatnagar, UP, and also in Assam Agricultural University, and in Tripura. Besides numerous such programmes, at AAU more than 64 training programmes for farmers, entrepreneurs and Self Help Groups (SHG) on livestock and Poultry farming and community development in collaboration with the Directorate of Extension Education as Dean, F.V.Sc at Assam Agricultural University organized. More than, 6,500 farmers, 450 Field Veterinary Officers were trained during that time as extension activities.
• Advisory/consultancy services extended for many entrepreneurs, Self Help Groups, dairy farms, piggery farms, poultry farms, and fodder farms.

Institute building/Development activities carried out:

• As Chief Consultant contributed in Development of Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) labs, GLP compliance Animal House Facility building, SC/ST Training complex facility, Mini sports complex etc. and involved in Academic and Research Management and administration activities at IASST, Govt. of India, Guwahati.
• As Director of the State Govt. of Tripura and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TLDA, Govt. of Tripura established the new Collège of Veterinary Science (Affiliated to Tripura Central University) with receipt of recognition from the VCI, Govt. of India, and streamlined the ARDD and TLDA with successful fund/grant and resource mobilization from central government.
• As Director & VC (A),Dean and Joint Director (Academic) of ICAR-IVRI deemed university, ICAR, GoI, UP (with five national campuses) managed, governed and looked into the entire academic, education and training and post graduate students’ research in 22 disciplines of veterinary and animal sciences, 10 National Diploma courses of one year duration in ten disciplines and all the regular institute and sponsored national and international training courses (about 35 annually) besides project works of outside university students of various institutions of the country.
• As Chairman/Member of the Scientific Research Council of ICAR-IVRI Deemed University, involved in research project development, screening, review and management of the projects from time to time. In 2010 December, total 272 research projects managed, out of which, 125 were Institute projects, 95 National outside funded, 6 International projects, and 46 Service projects.
• Chairman and Dean of the Post Graduate faculty, contributed in streamlining and developing entire PG education and PG students’ research at ICAR- IVRI Deemed University since 2006 till 2011. New courses on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Management, Entrepreneurship development, Library Information system, Animal Welfare have been introduced. Doctoral degree programme introduced in Biostatistics. MBA in Veterinary and livestock programme initiated. Introduced Students’ Experiential learning programme.
• Chairman/Member of theITMC ( ICAR-IVRI Institute Technology Management Committee) and involved and contributed in various IPR and IPM issues for Transfer of Technology, Patenting and Commercialization of various technologies, Process and Products developed, invented and discovered in IVRI through Research Projects and Post Graduate research.(Technology commercialized – 5, Patents received – 4, Patents applied – 55 till 2011).
• Established and developed the ARIS (Agricultural Research Information Service) cell in the Faculty of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University with all required modern facilities.
• Implemented several major programmes and projects of Institute building activity, infrastructure development, academic programme at Assam Agricultural University, and ICAR-I.V.R.I Deemed University.
• As Chairman of Education committee of Veterinary Council of India and member of various inspection commissions contributed in evaluation of colleges for degree recognition in different universities.
• As Chairman, Technical Committees, developed strategies and action plans, policies and assisted technically for Livestock and Poultry development and monitoring in India particularly the North Eastern, eastern and northern region.
• Chairman/Member of various Technical Committees, Research Advisory Committees (RAC), ICAR’s Institutes’ Management Committees (IMC), Accreditation Committee, Livestock Development Agency, ICAR’s QRTs, National Core Groups, Argil. Business Advisory Panel, Project Report committees of State and Central Agricultural Universities, ICAR, Central and State Governments etc.
