Research

Prof. Baruah's research interest is in Environmental nanotechnology. His research concept is to make use of inexpensive wet-chemical methods to fabricate innovative materials and device components. I am using nanoparticles (ZnO, ZnS, Au, Ag, etc.) as building blocks for new materials (eg. nanowires, nanorods, microwires) and using them for practical applications like photocatalysis, solar cells, filters, gas-sensors. etc. Other area of interest is in self-assembled functional materials and devices, which include microbial objects as templates for fabricating novel materials and application in specific devices. His group has demonstrated the possibility of fabricating microwires by using these templates. I am working with biotechnologists for using fluorescent manganese doped zinc sulphide nanoparticles as biolabels and agriculturists for degrading pesticides through photocatalysis using doped metal oxide nanoparticles. Another area of interest is in molecular and single nanoparticle electronics by using electrodes with nanometer gaps and graphene for possible applications in fabrication of electronics and communication devices. Nanoantennas based on metamaterials is a new area of interest.
