What is this Programme about?

The mission of the BA program is to prepare competent and effective social professional committed to generalised practice with the ability to respond to the needs of individuals, families, groups, communities and organizations. The program is committed to command leadership coming from all walks of life, The programme in particular is aimed at identifying and addressing community needs and issues, including those related to the alleviation of poverty and oppression, cultural diversity and social and economic justice. In support of its educational endeavours, the program is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, lifelong learning and community service.

SOCIOLOGY is a profession devoted to helping people function as well as they can with their environments. B.A. graduates are entry-level generalist social professionals who provide services to individuals, groups, families, organizations, and communities. Of particular importance is concern for and willingness to work with oppressed and underserved populations. The BA level practitioner is seen as a generalist with certain areas of special expertise. The curriculum focuses on such roles as advocacy, referral, casework and problem solving functions. In addition, a major thrust and identity of the program is to prepare graduates for case management/community intervention positions. Most case management/community intervention models include the basic social work skills which the program currently covers. These are skills which are handled competently and professionally by BA(SOCIOLOGY) graduates.

The Bachelor of sociology course consists of three years of full-time university level study. It aims to prepare students for effective professional practice as in the social and community services sector.

The general objectives of the curriculum are associated with the liberal arts component of the BA Course, which in time sequence precedes the professional component of the BA course. The objectives are:

· To obtain knowledge from the humanities and social sciences that informs social work;

· To gain an understanding of the socioeconomic, political, psychological, and cultural forces that impinge upon people's lives;

· To become aware of the organisation of the society and its development.

To obtain knowledge that enables students to broaden their understanding of themselves and the world
