Three-Day Bihu Workshop Concludes Successfully, Showcasing Assam’s Rich Cultural Heritage and Student Talent

Assam down town University successfully concluded a three-day intensive Bihu Workshop at its campus, aimed at preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Assam. 

The workshop was organized through a collaborative effort between the Music Club and the Programme of Performing Arts, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, bringing together students passionate about traditional Assamese folk culture.

The workshop was formally inaugurated by Mr. Deep Jyoti Teron, Assistant Professor of Performing Arts, who introduced the resource person Mr. RANDHREE RAJ SAIKIA, an eminent folk artist. During the inaugural session, he highlighted the importance of integrating traditional art forms within the academic environment to ensure the preservation and continued appreciation of Assam’s cultural traditions. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Utpal Datta, Professor of Practice, Performing Arts, and Dr. Radali Duarah, Chairperson of the Dorian Music Club.

The first day focused on the historical origins and vocal traditions of Bihu Geet, allowing participants to understand the cultural and musical roots of the festival. The second day concentrated on the physical discipline of Bihu dance movements along with the rhythmic patterns of Dhol Badan, offering practical exposure to the energetic performance style associated with the festival. On the third day, participants prepared for a final performance rehearsal followed by a live showcase, demonstrating the skills and knowledge gained during the workshop.

The workshop concluded with a Bihu performance at the K Block, where participants presented their performances before a live audience. The event ended with the distribution of certificates to all participants, marking another significant step in Assam down town University’s ongoing commitment to nurturing cultural education and promoting the vibrant traditions of Assam.
