Assam down town University celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity, aligning with this year’s global theme, “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development.” Organized by the AdtU Biodiversity Cell and the Green Intention Program, the event brought together students, faculty, and environmental advocates in a shared mission to protect and celebrate biodiversity.
The event began with an inaugural address by Prof. (Dr.) L. N. Kakati, Chairperson of the Biodiversity Cell, who spoke on the ecological importance of biodiversity. Dr. N. N. Dutta, Chancellor of AdtU, delivered the keynote, focusing on the role of butterflies as both pollinators and indicators of ecosystem health. Prof. (Dr.) N. C. Talukdar, Vice Chancellor, traced the historical significance of the day and raised concern over the sixth mass extinction, urging urgent global and local action to safeguard our natural heritage.
A major highlight was the launch of the second edition of “AdtU Nature,” the official newsletter of the Biodiversity Cell, followed by a plantation drive to inaugurate the proposed AdtU Butterfly Park, envisioned as a living lab and refuge for pollinators.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Gunamoni Das, Chief Editor of the newsletter, applauding all participants and contributors. The celebration served as a strong statement of AdtU’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.
