Assam down town University hosted an event titled “Paradigm Shift in Indian Industrial Relations: Decoding the New Labor Codes”, conducted by the Faculty of Commerce & Management with the objective of providing students with deeper insights into the evolving landscape of labour laws in India.
The session featured distinguished speakers including Major Rupam Talukdar, HR Manager at ITC Limited (ICML Guwahati), and Mr. Thangjam Rudranksh Singha, Talent Acquisition (North East Migrant Regional) at Swiggy Instamart Warehouse. Their industry perspectives added practical relevance to the discussion.
Labour reforms in India mark one of the most significant transformations in the country’s industrial and employment framework. With the consolidation of 29 existing labour laws into four comprehensive labour codes, the reforms aim to simplify compliance, enhance transparency, and strike a balance between the interests of employers and employees.
The session covered several key areas of discussion. The speakers provided an overview of the four labour codes, Wages, Industrial Relations, Social Security, and Occupational Safety & Health, offering clarity on their scope and implications. Worker welfare, including employee rights and social security, was discussed in the context of the evolving employment environment. The dialogue also highlighted sectoral differences, drawing comparisons between manufacturing and gig economy platforms, thereby illustrating how labour codes affect different industries.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Tanima Tarafdar, Associate Professor, and Dr. Sayanika Deka Sarma, Senior Assistant Professor, from the Faculty of Commerce and Management, whose efforts ensured the successful execution of the programme.
The event witnessed active participation from students of MBA, MBA Healthcare, and BBA programmes. The session was highly interactive and concluded with an engaging question-and-answer round, allowing students to clarify their queries and gain practical insights.
