Programme Overview
The Department of Zoology was established as a premier center of teaching and research in animal sciences in 2018. This program is intended to develop learning about Zoology and the significance of fauna ranging from single-cell to multi-cellular systems. The current Post graduation curriculum has been totally restructured. A precise balance between classical courses and modern biological courses has been made to introduce and emphasize skill-based programmes. The academic training imparted to the department’s M.Sc. students, equips them to enter doctoral programs of leading institutes in the country and abroad. The current research and teaching in the Department include diverse aspects of Zoology with a balance of organismic and reductionist biology. It offers teaching and research programmes in diverse areas, such as Taxonomy and Basic Entomology, Biochemistry and Bioinstrumentation, Genetics, Cell Biology, Mini Research, Fundamental of Statistics, Endocrinology and Immunology, Molecular Biology and Genomics, Evolution and Ecology, Research methodology, Animal Physiology, Developmental Biology, Animal Diversity, Entomology, Fish Biology. Apart from these courses, M.Sc. programme is being revised under NEP 2020 for the welfare of the students and to fulfil the vision and mission of the Department. Besides, the courses like Techno-professional skills, Personality Developmental course, Generic Elective, Research Methodology, Research Ethics, Universal Human Values, and MOOCS programs also represent this restructured syllabus. This programme through the dissertation will also help the students to understand the basic principles of nature and will also provide scope for hands-on experience to experiment with nature /animals and thereby enable them to develop an aptitude for research in various allied fields of animal sciences. Apart from teaching, the faculty has been publishing papers in peer-reviewed research journals. The department engaged in interdisciplinary research. This curriculum will also enable them to overcome several day-to-day problems faced by our society by providing them with some workable solutions.

Course Overview

The purpose of this course is to develop analytical skills among the students and enhance their proficiency in English language use. It introduces the students to various types of sentences used in different situations. Course Overview

This course will help the students to impart knowledge of taxonomy and schools of biological classification. It will also provide knowledge of the application of zoology in insect pest management and insect-based industries for the benefit of mankind.

Course Overview

This course will help the students to understand the fundamentals of the structure, composition, and function of biomolecules. Also to develop knowledge and identify the chemical logic of bioenergetics and metabolic pathways and to impart knowledge of principles and applications of analytical instruments in life sciences. Also to analyze biological samples for purification and characterization of Proteins and Nucleic Acids.

This course introduces students to the science of heredity, from its basic principles to the most recent advances in the field. It also imparts knowledge of classical and molecular genetics.

  • Develop knowledge of chromosomes, their special forms and aberrations, and the extension of Mendel’s principles.
  • Develop concepts in classical animal genetics and their application. It leads to a better understanding of human genetic profiles and related diseases.
  • Develop knowledge to explain the genetic information that is passed on in eukaryotes and prokaryotes, control of gene expression, and genetic engineering.
Course Overview

The main focus of the course cell biology is to study the structure and function of cells. This course will focus on Eukaryotic cell biology, including subjects such as membrane structure and composition, transport, and trafficking; the cytoskeleton and cell mobility; macromolecule breakdown and energy generation; and cell integration into tissues. Important cellular processes such as cell cycle regulation, signal transduction, apoptosis (programmed cell death), and cancer cell biology will also be covered. Throughout the semester, we will try to connect errors in these numerous biological processes to human disorders to develop a better understanding of what happens when cells don't function properly.

Course Overview

Physiology is the study of the mechanics of the animal and human bodies studied at the molecular, cellular, tissue and organ levels. It will teach students to understand the physics and biochemistry of each organ system and how each of these systems contributes to the functioning of the body as a whole.

The course of genomics and molecular biology includes understanding of DNA, RNA and protein molecule’s structure and variations. The course pays attention in understanding the minute events associated with central dogma of life starting from DNA being replicated to transcribed and ultimately translated. The Post transcriptional and post translational events are discussed in dept. The course also touches upon about mutation, mutagens and repair mechanisms.

The course is designed to develop deep understanding on the nature, function and classification of hormones. Acquire knowledge on the structure of Hypothalamus, Pituitary, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Pancreas, Adrenal Glands. Acquire knowledge on the synthesis of their hormones. Study the innate and adaptive immunity, antigens and antibodies interactions.

This course will introduce students to the morphology and physiological systems of insects. The diversity of insects is readily recognizable through morphological features, and their abundance and ability to occupy a wide range of ecological niches can be attributed to adaptations of both external structures and internal physiology.

This paper deals with identification of indigenous and exotic fishes of NE India. It covers gut content analysis and growth indices of fish. It contains analysis of physico-chemical parameters of water, histological study of fish gonads, identification of fish parasites, fish osteology, DNA extraction from fish tissues and analysis of gene sequences from databases.
