M.Sc. in Microbiology is a two-year postgraduate programme that focuses on a more detailed and advanced study of microorganisms, including microbial cellular processes, their harmful and beneficial aspects, microbes for human welfare, molecular details of microbial cells, and the application of this knowledge for societal benefits in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, soil and environment, food processing, and pharmaceuticals. The objective of the programme is to produce knowledgeable and skilled microbiologists by enhancing the abilities and skills of students and preparing them to apply microbiology theories to real-world problems faced by the industry.

MICROBIAL GENETICS & PHYSIOLOGY
Course Overview

Microbial genetics and physiology course includes the study of Microbial genome, predominantly of bacteria and bacteriophages. It includes concepts of central dogma, DNA replication, plasmid, bacteriophage lifecycle, regulation of gene expression. The microbial physiology part includes growth parameters and nutrient requirements of microorganisms and microbial cell signalling. The Practical component include isolation of plasmid DNA, chromosomal DNA, electrophoresis, preparation of competent cell, transformation (Blue-white screening).

  • Explain the structural organization of DNA, Illustrate different mechanisms of gene transfer and their application in research

Introduction to Microbiology &Microbial Diversity course include the study of history of microbiology, different bacterial, fungi, viral pathogens, their general characteristics, Microbes and their interaction with the environment, bioremediation ,bioleaching,. It also includes the practical component bearing the diagnostic tests, biochemical tests, isolation techniques, staining techniques for identification of bacterial and fungal pathogens.

The course provides students with both a knowledge of general scientific methods and contents of the food microbiology field and specific professional skills. In particular, the course provides insights concerning aspects of microbial ecophysiology, determination and control of food microorganisms, and the distribution of spoilage and pathogen microorganisms in plant- and animal-based food.
