Every year, lakhs of students sit for NEET and only a small share get an MBBS seat. But one can build a healthcare career without an MBBS seat. Pharmacy, nursing programmes and several allied health courses admit students through merit or state-level tests. Some allied courses now list NEET in their eligibility rules though.

Yes, as long as the course and the institution are approved by the right body. Nursing comes under the Indian Nursing Council (INC), pharmacy under the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and allied health under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP), set up under the NCAHP (National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions) Act, 2021.
One thing to understand clearly: recognition doesn’t mean NEET is never needed. In late 2025, NCAHP notified new curricula that list NEET among the eligibility criteria for courses like physiotherapy, optometry, nutrition and dietetics and dialysis technology, starting from the 2026-27 session. In many cases the requirement is simply to have appeared in NEET, not to score high. Rules are still being rolled out, so check with the university before you apply.

Course Duration, Eligibility and NEET Requirements
- B.Pharm: The course duration is 4 years. Students who have completed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) or Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) are eligible. NEET is not required.
- D.Pharm: This is a 2-year diploma programme. Students from either the PCB or PCM stream can apply after Class 12. NEET is not required.
- B.Sc. Nursing: The programme runs for 4 years. Students must have studied PCB and English in Class 12, with a minimum of 45% marks as per the stated INC norm. NEET requirements depend on the institution.
- Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT): The course duration is 4.5 years. Students must have a PCB background in Class 12. NEET is listed as a requirement by NCAHP from the 2026–27 academic session, as indicated in the provided information.
- B.Sc. Optometry: This is a 4-year programme for students with a PCB background. NEET is listed by NCAHP from the 2026-27 academic session, according to the provided information.
- B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) / Radiology: These programmes generally run for 3 to 4 years, depending on the course. Students with PCB in Class 12 can apply. NEET requirements should be checked against the current admission rules of the institution.

It's not the pay table that should come first. Which would you prefer - working with patients all day or being in a lab? Can you work shifts in a hospital? Do you prefer medicine and chemistry to anatomy?
