Assam down town University hosted a One-Day Special Talk on the topic “Crime and Society”, organized by the Programme of Sociology under the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
The event commenced with the felicitation of the resource person, Dr. Ranga Ranjan Das, Director of the Law Research Institute, Gauhati High Court, by Dr. Prateeti Barman (she/her), Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. This was followed by an inaugural song performed by students of the Humanities and Social Sciences department.
Dr. Prateeti Barman delivered the welcome address, after which Mr. Ranjan Das, Assistant Professor and Organizing Secretary, highlighted the significance of the theme “Crime and Society.” A brief introduction of the resource person was provided by Dr. Shyam Choudhary, Assistant Professor and Co-Organizing Secretary of the event.
Dr. Ranga Ranjan Das presented an in-depth and holistic discussion on the origin, causes, and complexities of crime in society. He emphasized the impact of cultural influences, power dynamics, poverty, and systemic inequality on the prevalence of crime. He further stressed the importance of fostering empathy and inclusion to build a more equitable and harmonious society and mitigate criminal behaviors.
This special talk served as an excellent platform for intellectual engagement, inspiring students to think critically about societal issues and encouraging them to contribute toward creating a just and equitable society.
