Assam down town University had the privilege of hosting a two-day immersive workshop on Manipuri Classical Dance and the traditional Manipuri martial art form Thang Ta on 23rd and 24th May 2025. Conducted by the renowned classical dancer and cultural exponent Ms. Kankana Singh, the workshop attracted enthusiastic participation from students across various programmes.
The sessions began with a deep dive into the historical evolution and spiritual essence of Manipuri classical dance, with Ms. Singh shedding light on its devotional roots, symbolic gestures, musical nuances, and its intrinsic ties to the Vaishnavite traditions of Manipur. She also highlighted the rich diversity within the art form by discussing different gharanas (schools) and their stylistic variations.
Complementing the dance component, Ms. Singh introduced participants to Thang Ta, the ancient Manipuri martial art that beautifully blends fluid movements with combat techniques. Students engaged in practical demonstrations, learning basic footwork, stances, and the philosophical underpinnings of the discipline, which emphasize harmony of body and mind.
Designed to be both educational and experiential, the workshop offered participants a holistic understanding of Manipuri cultural heritage, reinforcing the university’s commitment to promoting India’s diverse art forms and cultural learning.
