AdtU and UN WFP Rice Fortification Project Promote Nutrition Awareness Among School Students in Guwahati

Assam down town University, as the Technical Support Unit (TSU) of the United Nations World Food Programme (UN WFP) Rice Fortification Project, successfully conducted a public lecture on "Rice Fortification and its Benefits" for students of Guwahati Refinery Higher Secondary School, Noonmati, Guwahati.

The awareness session, attended by over 60 high school students, aimed to enhance understanding of the nutritional importance of fortified rice and its role in preventing anaemia and improving overall health. The lecture was delivered by Dr. Jasmin Islam, Assistant Professor, Programme of Food Nutrition and Dietetics and TSU Member, Assam down town University.

The session highlighted the concept of rice fortification and its numerous benefits, including improved nutritional status, stronger immunity, better cognitive development, and enhanced well-being. Students were also introduced to safety standards, quality assurance mechanisms, and various government initiatives supporting the distribution of fortified rice through social welfare programs.

An interactive question-and-answer session led by Ms. Nilakshi Bhagavati, Program Coordinator, TSU, encouraged students to actively engage in discussions on nutrition and healthy dietary practices. 

The session successfully strengthened awareness about rice fortification and reinforced the importance of adopting nutritious food choices for a healthier future.
