The research policy of Assam down town University aims to generate and support a research culture among its faculties and students and leverage it for enriching and increasing the professional capability of the faculty members. The faculties of Assam down town University are involved in sustainability-focused research, in addition to teaching responsibilities. The university has initiated research work along with Ph.D programme in the areas of Diabetes, Tuberculosis ,molecular studies of cancer, Green Synthesis of nano-particles and their application in health , environment and pollution ,functional properties of bio-molecules from medicinal plants against various diseases in Agri-crops, infectious & non-infectious diseases like Jaundice and artificial intelligence etc

Progress of Research Activities at Assam down town University

The first project entitled “Chemical Profiling of Joha and Black Rice of NER for Nutritional, Nutraceutical Parameters and Aromatic Compounds” was funded by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in the year 2016. The Principal Investigator of the project from Assam down town University is Dr. Saikat Sen, Professor, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

As per the objectives of the project four varieties of Joha and four varieties (Keteki, Kon, Kola and Maniki Madhuri Joha) of black rice (Chakhao amubi and poireiton) were investigated for in vitro antioxidant activity. Ethanol, Per. Ether, Ethyl acetate and Water extract of the whole rice exhibit moderate to potent antioxidant activity. In vitro, ex vivo anti-hyperlipidemic activity of the rice extract showed potential activity to inhibit different enzymes (HMG CoA reductase, Pancreatic lipase and Cholesterol esterase) responsible for the production of cholesterol or lipids. In vivo hypolipidemic activity was carried out successfully for selected rice extracts. Extract produced lipid/cholesterol lowering potential when treated on the hyperlipidemic animal models. Some bioactive phenolic compounds were identified through HPLC for all the varieties of rice samples. Currently, human trial to evaluate hypolipidemic/antidiabetic potential of rice is going on in down town Hospital.

The second project entitled “Characterization of high value phytochemicals of anti-diabetic and Immunomodulatory properties in North Eastern banana varieties” was funded by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in the year 2018 for a duration of 3 years. The Principal Investigator of the project from Assam down town University is Dr. Ananya Kashyap, Associate Professor, Food Nutrition & Dietetics. As per the objectives of the project The collection of samples,

Isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds and enumeration of their bioactive properties in vitro by assaying antioxidant potential are in progress. On the basis of the time line activities done during first two years were-collection and identification of samples, extraction of samples total antioxidant assays of different parts of Musa balbisiana Colla, in vitro toxicity study, amylase inhibition assay, method standardization of making banana pulp powder, hepatoprotective activity and antidiabetic study. The workshops were conducted on banana utilization in two nearby villages as a part of an awareness programme.

The project entitled “Foldscope a Tool for Evaluation of Genotoxic Effect of Food Preservatives: A Model experiment for students of Life Sciences” was sanctioned by DBT, Govt. of India on 20th March 2018 with a budget of 8 lakhs for a period of 1 year and was further extended for 6months till 19th September 2019.

As per the objectives of the project school outreach programme was conducted in nearby areas of our University and few schools of city areas. Students knowledge regarding microscope were documented in the outreach programme. Based on the data collection, a manuscript was designed and got accepted in “Journal of Biological Education”. In the paper, use of Foldscope in High school as an alternate for light microscope available in Govt. school was highlighted. Extraction of residual pesticides from fruits and vegetables of Guwahati markets was also performed under one of the objective. The result showed highest residual pesticide content in apple followed by guava and pear. Also comparative chromatic aberration study induced by standards (Malathion & Chlorpyrifos), residual pesticides and food preservatives BHT, BHA, Propyl gallate, MSG, Sodium benzoate etc. were also performed. Based on the above studies, poster and oral presentations presented in the following Conferences: a. National Seminar on Recent Advances in BioSciences, Pragjyotish College, Guwahati b.National Conference on Translational Drug Discovery: Current Trends and Future Interventions, Assam down town University, Guwahati c. Frontiers in Chemical Sciences (FICS 2018), IIT Guwahati d. Regional Seminar on Science for Sustainable Development (SSD-2019), B. Borooah College, Guwahati and e. International Conference on Changing Environment: Understanding their Emerging Challenges and their Management Strategies, Delhi University. The students of Biochemistry Program did dissertation with the above mentioned chromatic aberration studies and participated and presented papers in the conference along with the field studies using Foldscope in Meghalaya and did a market study of residual pesticides content in fruits from most of the districts of Assam. Finally, this project has been completed and remarked that Foldscope is a good instrument for conducting regular practical in High School as well as basic experiments like mitosis, cytochemical staining of biomolecules, chromatic aberration studies like micronucleus formation using various staining techniques in UG and PG courses of Life Sciences.

The fourth project entitled “Design and Fabrication of a portable friction stir welding machine” was funded by Assam Science Technology & Environment Council, DST, Govt. of Assam in the year 2018 with a duration of 2 Years. The project from Assam down town University is coordinated by Mr. Manash Jyoti Borah from the Department of Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with Assam Engineering College, Guwahati. As per the objective of the project Friction stir welding FSW has been performed only with the help of heavy machineries like CNC milling machine or milling machine. The major advantage of this machine will be of Low Cost welding machine, Light weight, conveniently transportable, replacement of rivets etc. Keeping all this factors in mind, the main aim of this project is to make joining process easier and also to make popularity of FSW among the small scale industries which will help in “MAKE IN INDIA” project. On the completion of one year the project investigators have achieve success in completing their first prototype design.The investigators are currently working on upgrading of the machine.

The fifth project entitled “Development of APP for speaking English into Assamese and vice-versa” is a mini consultancy project for a short duration sponsored by Assam association of North America (AANA), USA a NGO to enhance social values of the assamese language. The project team comprises of Mr. Mriganka Sarmah and Mr. Gautam Borah. The main aim of this project is to make conversation easier and understandable between two persons speaking daily usable easy English sentences or Assamese andusing technology in the form of computer programming daily used English language sentences translation into native north eastern language spoken in the state of Assam (Assamese).


The Sixth Project entitled “Population structure and Genetic diversity of five torrential fishes from the North East India: Implications for conservation” has been awarded under National Post-Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF). (EC Life Sciences) by Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India under the guidance of Dr. Gitartha Kaushik, Assistant Professor, Zoology. The objective of the project is to investigate the distribution of these five fishes in North east India as due to environmental and anthropogenic stresses, some of these living jewels become extinct from a number of habitats and to analyze the genetic diversity of the selected five species of fishes so that their population in north East India can be drawn. This study will help in management strategies and in stock – specific conservation
