The quest for learning
has forever been a driving force for human civilization. A library is a place that
embodies learning, culture, and other important secular values and manifestations of the common
good, and there is a need arising from our common humanity to visit them.
Back in the days, before the advent of online search engines, people with questions commonly
turned to the most reliable source they knew: their local library. All you had to do was ask,
and a
reference librarian would answer your question directly or point you towards a book containing
the
information you sought.
Libraries have evolved as the public’s needs have changed. In fact, if you haven’t visited your
local
public library in a while, you may be surprised at what it now has to offer. In addition to
books, many
libraries also loan CDs and DVDs; some now also offer digital copies of books, audiobooks,
movies,
and more through Internet platforms.
Today, we must respond to changes that are taking place in education, clinical care, and
research, as
well as in the publication of scholarly information—namely digital publications. It is as
simplistic to
say that all print will be replaced by digital texts as it is to say that we should encourage
and
motivate everyone, to enhance their knowledge of how a library is beneficial to all.
Assam down town University’s Library is named “Harinarayan Duttabaruah Library”. It is an effort
to
fulfil the overarching vision of today’s society. Harinarayan Duttabaruah was a famous Assamese
personality who worked relentlessly for the enrichment and preservation of Assamese Literature
and Vaishnavite culture. He was conferred “Sahitya Ratna” by the Assam Sahitya Sabha. He wrote
several books like Prachin Kamrup Kayastha Samazor Itibritta, Chitra Darshan, etc. He edited
several
Vaishnavite books collecting valuable information from satras and erudite scholars. He along
with
his brother Bichitra Narayan Duttabaruah started the “Dutta Baruah Publishing House” and
“Lawyers
Book Store”. He will be always remembered for his great contribution to the Assamese society,
especially to the Vaishnavite Culture.
The Librarian is an important part of any library The librarian takes care of the library and
its
resources. The typical job of a librarian includes managing collection development and
acquisitions,
cataloguing, collections management, circulation, and providing a range of services, such as
reference, information, instruction, training services, etc
I hope that HNDB will be helpful for our faculties, students and researchers to enhance their
knowledge and contribute to the betterment of society.
Long Live AdtU
