MSc Microbiology

What is this Programme about?

M.Sc. in Microbiology is a 2-year pos tgraduate programme, which deals with basic and advanced study of the microorganisms, including microbial cellular processes and develops understanding and knowledge for applying it onto the sectors such as health, agriculture, environment etc. The programme is divided across 4 semesters, of six months each, and the basic eligibility for applying to the programme is graduate qualification in the biological science stream, completed from a recognized educational board.

Programme Contents:

Background:

Microbiology is the branch of science which deals with the study of diverse groups of microorganisms. Microorganisms have both harmful and beneficial effects on human beings, various plans and animals. This branch of science deals with the detail study of those microorganisms. This course includes study of medically important microorganisms as well as microorganisms of agricultural, environmental and industrial importance. Apart from these it includes subjects like Molecular biology, Recombinant DNA Technology, Biochemistry etc. which enables a person to get technical knowledge of the biological science. In short Microbiology is an immerging branch of science with very high potential of research and development.

Scope

After completion of the course one can opt for career in:

  • Research and development laboratories as a research scholar.
  • Hospital laboratories as a microbiologist.
  • In various food processing industries as microbiologist and quality control officer.
  • In beverage industries and pharmaceutical industries.
  • In various biotechnological industries.

Eligibility

Students who have completed B.Sc. in Microbiology, Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology, Medical laboratory technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry and related subjects with 50% marks from a recognised university are eligible to take up M.Sc. in Microbiology course.

Rules and Regulations

Students will be awarded the degree of Master of Science in Microbiology after successful completion of the course.

  • The course will be of two years duration comprising of four semesters, with theory, practical papers and one project work.
  • Theory papers will carry 100 marks (60 marks theory and 40 marks for internal assessment).
  • Practical papers will carry 50 marks (30 marks practical and 20 marks for internal assessment)
  • Students need to secure 50% marks in both theory and internal assessment for passing a paper.
  • Students need to have a minimum of 75% attendance to be able to appear for the final examination.
  • Two sessional will be conducted in a semester carrying 20 marks each for theory and one sessional carrying 10 marks for practical.
  • 20% of the total marks scored in each sessional will be considered in internal marks.
  • Students need to submit a project carrying 200 marks in their fourth semester.
