Research  Programm at Assam Down Town University


The research policy of Assam down town University aims to generate and support a research culture among its faculties and students and leverage it for enriching and increasing the professional capability of the faculty members. The faculties of Assam down town University are involved in sustainability-focused research, in addition to teaching responsibilities. The university has initiated research work along with Ph.D programme in the areas of Diabetes,Tuberculosis ,molecular studies of  cancer, Green Synthesis of nano-particles and their application in health , environment and pollution ,functional properties of bio-molecules from medicinal plants against various diseases in Agri-crops, infectious & non-infectious diseases like Jaundice and artificial intelligence etc

Assam down town University is the first private University from North East region being awarded the 2nd Mega Network Project entitled “Characterization of high value phytochemicals of anti-diabetic and immunomodulatory properties in North Eastern banana varieties” funded by Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India very recently along with other projects. This is net work project and more  than 10 Research institutions such as Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Chennai, ICAR - National Research Centre for Banana, Tiruchirapalli, Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar, IIT Kharagpur, North Eastern Hill University, Shillong, IASST Assam, Mizoram university, Assam Agri University ,Translational Health Sciences & Technology, Faridabad. The project team from Assam down town University is coordinated by Dr. Ananya Kashyap and Ms. Daisy Sarma from Food Nutrition & Dietetics. The ultimate outcome of the project will be to analyze the complete profile of the high value phytochemicals of North Eastern bananas and to find out the glycemic index , anti-diabetic, anticancer and immunomodulatory properties in vitro and in vivo  to develop a therapeutic strategy.

The first mega network project “Chemical profiling of Joha and black rice of NER for Nutritional, Nutraceutical Parameters and Aromatic Compounds” was initiated in 2016 along with other research institutions/ Universities in the country. Through this, Assam down town University is now becoming the major partner of two mega network project linking with more than 100 top most research institutions and Universities in the country. This project aimed to profile antioxidant molecules present in certain Joha and black rice.


In this proposal, the research team will explore the antioxidant and hypolipidemic effectiveness of few Joha/black rice varieties in the light of a new experimental observation. The biomolecues associated with the rice varieties and their significant function to control the cholesterol and other lipid profiles related to the Cardiovascuilar diseases etc will be studied. The project is coordinated by Dr. Saikat Sen and Dr. Raja Chakraborty, Associate Professors, Department of Pharmacy.

The third project entitled “Foldscope a Tool for Evaluation of Genotoxic Effect of Food Preservatives: A Model Experiment for Under Graduate Students of Life Science” is also funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India and coordinated by Dr. Jyotchna Gogoi, Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry. A total number of 445 approved schools/colleges/institutions/universities within NE region and other regions of India are taking part in the project. The total budget is around 30 crores. The outcome of the project is to find out simple technique by using biological tools to find out the toxic substances/ contaminants in the vegetables and food. The project is also aimed to train the students on such techniques and also make an awareness programs regarding the toxicity of such substances associated with vegetables and food items etc. This project will be implemented in semi urban high schools of Bonda, Panikhaiti and Chandrapur area of Gauhati. The outcome of the project would help the student to understand the toxicity at the gene level which leads to different types of health and environmental issues.

The fourth project entitled “Design and Fabrication of Portable Friction Welding Machine" supported by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India under a special scheme implemented by Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Govt. of assam. The project is coordinated by Mr. Manash Jyoti Borah of Department of Mechanical Engineering. The main objective of this project is to make a simple device to join process/ welding easier, and also to make popularity of portable friction welding machine among small scale industries which will help in “MAKE IN INDIA” project. The device may also substitute the existing heavy and bulky welding machines.

The fifth project entitled “Development of APP for speaking English into Assamese and vice-versa” funded by Assam association of North America (AANA), USA an NGO to enhance social values of the assamese language. The project team comprises of Mr. Mriganka Sarmah and Mr. Gautam Borah. The main aim of this project is to make conversation easier and understandable between two persons speaking daily usable easy English sentences or Assamese. The project is under the broad area of Natural Language Processing which encompasses computational methods for determining the natural meaning of the spoken or written sentences.

The faculties of university has published more than 350 research papers in leading national and international journal and filed patents as well. The University is already recognized by Department of Science & Technology as a research organization and received SIRO Certificate. University is also having Animal house facilities approved by the Govt of India to undertake research studies using small animals. The collective outcome of the research activities of the University utilizing the richest resources of this region may bring a significant achievement in research front, and will be very much useful for the people
