Dr.B.G.Unni, Director Research

Though the University completed more than 6 years of existence, the 'Research Wing' is quite young, However, attempts were made in all aspects to develop research and research facilities in collaboration and interaction with other prestigious R&D institutions and Universities within and outside Assam.. Accordingly, the University has signed quite a number of MoU's during the last 6 years, and due to this provision, there is a lot of scope for interaction between the faculties for research and other academic activities. The University has been recognized as a research institute by Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of India since 2012. The University has also got approval from Ministry of Environment & Forest to undertake research with small animals. The University has already initiated research works along with Ph.D program in the areas of Diabetes, Tuberculosis, Molecular Studies of Cancer Biology, synthetic anti-cancer agents, Green Synthesis of nano particles and their application in health, environment and pollution related studies. Functional properties of bio-molecules against ear infection and other properties against various diseases in agricultural crops, infectious and non-infectious diseases (jaundice) and artificial intelligence etc. The ideas conceived on these subjects have been formulated in the form of major proposal in collaboration with pioneer institutions/ Universities of the country. These Project proposals are under peer review at the Department of Biotechnology, ICMR, Department of Science & Technology (SERB) , UGC and Ministry of Ayush respectively Among these, one of the project entitled “Chemical profiling of Joha and black rice of NER for Nutritional, Nutraceutical Parameters and Aromatic Compounds” submitted by the University in collaboration with major institutions of the country is being sanctioned by DBT for funding under a special scheme for North Eastern region. Assam down town University is the only private university in the network project along with other institutions/universities such as Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, Haryana, Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology, Guwahati, Gauhati University, Jalukbari, Nalbari College, Nalbari, Pandu College, Guwahati, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Assam down town University, Guwahati, The Dale View College of Pharmacy & Research Centre, Kerala, National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology, New Delhi, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, New Delhi, Indian Institute of Natural Resins and Gums, Ranchi, Assam University, Silchar, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, National Institute of Plant Genome Research, New Delhi, Tezpur University, Assam, M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, Sikkim University, Gangtok, Bose Institute, Kolkata, Acharya N G Ranga Agricultural University, Tamil Nadu, ICAR-Indian Institute of Rice Research, Hyderabad, University of Delhi, New Delhi, ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, The Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi, Manipur University, Imphal, CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow, Tripura University, Agartala and Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi involved in this project as working group members of the mega network Project. Dr. Saikat Sen & Dr. Raja Chakraborty, Associate Professors of department of Pharmacy is the Project Team from Assam down town university .

The project is aimed to profile antioxidant molecules present in certain Joha and black rice. In this proposal, the research team will explore the antioxidant and hypolipidemic effectiveness of Joha/black rice varieties in the light of a new experimental observation. In vitro and in ex vivo method will be used to investigate antioxidant and hypolipidemic activity and also try to find the answer whether such rice supplement could be helpful for human with hyperlipidemia or at risk of high lipid profile. Thus a proper scientific investigation add more value added products towards establishing the therapeutic effectiveness of rice ,and to promote the use of such rice varieties in future which in turn may have a positive effect on livelihood of the people of this region.

The "Research Cell" of Assam down town University is having quite well equipped laboratory/ infrastructural facilities to undertake research work in some of the areas mentioned above. The University has already earmarked and spent quite sufficient money for research in the areas of societal importance. Over and above, the scientific backgrounds of the faculties are extremely good to undertake such challenging areas of research in health sector to serve and solve the health problems of the people of this region and country in general.
