Social work is both a profession and social science. It is the application of both social theory and research methods to study to improve the lives of the individual, group, family and community in the society. Social Work Profession has its own code of ethics to practice and is committed in the pursuit of social rights, social justice, to enhance the dignity and quality of life. Social workers are concerned with social problems, their causes and attempt to find their solutions. The educational qualification for the career in social work is Master in Social Work (MSW), which is 2 years course open to all graduates from any stream.

Scope :  The main task of the social worker are to link clients with agencies and programs that will meet their psychological needs, Counseling (psychotherapy), human services management, social welfare policy analysis, community organizing, advocacy, teaching (in schools of social work), and social science research. Social worker works in a variety of settings, including non profit or public social service agencies, grassroots advocacy organizations, community health agencies, schools, or faith-based organization. Other social workers work as psychotherapists, counselors, or mental health practitioners, normally working in co-ordination with psychiatrists, psychologist, or other medical professionals. Within the mental health field, social workers may work in private practice, much like clinical psychologists or members of other counseling professions often do. Other examples of social work include: helping the poor organized for better condition, providing assistance to work through government red tape and obtaining legal aid. Social workers in India have fought for land and tenant’s rights. They have assisted in natural disasters and refugee problems. They have worked in public health programs and public education programs such as AIDS awareness and addiction.
